What are Peanut Allergy Treatment Options?

Thank you for taking the time to read this article, a great way to improve your background and overall understanding of this topic.

Peanut allergies represent some of the most common, and dangerous types of allergies. Reactions to peanut allergies can be life-threatening, so it is important to understand if you or your child have this allergy and what steps can be taken. The most effective peanut allergy treatment is avoidance. This is because severe sufferers can experience anaphylaxis and even death if they come into contact with even a fragment of a peanut. Less severe sufferers can experience other distressing symptoms such as hives, gastrointestinal distress and swelling. Peanut allergies are so dangerous that many schools have banned peanuts and products that contain them.

If you or your child have peanut allergies, you will need to be very vigilant about reading food labels and inquiring about ingredients of restaurant dishes. Peanuts are often used in unexpected ways. For example, some people use peanut butter in their chili. Many people with a peanut allergy wouldn't think to ask if peanut products are in their bowl of chili, but they should. Not only that, but some foods are prepared in factories that also process foods containing peanuts. For some sufferers, even a miniscule amount of peanut residue can be deadly. Every single food or beverage you are considering should be stringently checked to ensure no peanuts or peanut byproducts are in the product.

For an individual with a peanut allergy, reactions can be fast and fatal within minutes. This is why if you suspect peanuts have been consumed, you should call for emergency medical assistance by dialing 911 immediately. Also, individuals with peanut allergies should always carry a syringe of epinephrine with them to administer if a reaction does occur. Epinephrine can increase the heart rate, constrict the blood vessels, and reduce swelling. An immediate injection can sometimes save one's life while they are waiting for medical help. It's also important for peanut allergy sufferers to wear a medic alert necklace or bracelet that informs others of their allergy. There are even special jewelry items such as those made by Life Alert that contain an emergency button that can be pressed to summon emergency medical help immediately without the use of a telephone.

Anyone who suspects a food allergy should visit their physician immediately. He or she can give you peanut allergy treatment advice that just might save your life. Peanut allergies, like all food allergies, should be attended to immediately to prevent a potentially life threatening reaction.

Today's Tip On Allergies

If a person is wondering if they are allergic to food, they need to first look at their family history. More than likely, if a person's parents have allergies, the individual will experience some form of allergic reaction. Allergies and other things are hereditary and can cause an individual to have to alter their life in order to deal with the allergy. Another way that people can develop an allergic reaction to food is in the early years of infancy and toddler hood. If a person is allergic to food, then this may be the prime time when the allergy will rear its ugly head.
